Richard Fink IV

From Hearing Loss to the Throga Technique: How Richard Fink IV Revolutionized Vocal Training

Richard Fink IV, a four-time Guinness World Record breaker, #1 best-selling author, and recognized by the Wall Street Journal as the “world’s leading online vocal coach,” has an extraordinary story. His journey to becoming a highly sought-after vocal specialist seems impossible, given his childhood prognosis of impending deafness.

As a child, Richard endured multiple ear tube surgeries and, by his early teens, faced significant hearing challenges: his right ear suffered 80% hearing loss with complete comprehension loss, and his left ear had 40% hearing loss with significant comprehension difficulties. As it turns out, despite his ears being mechanically healthy, a rare neurological disorder in his brain’s auditory cortex prevented proper processing of sound and identifying words clearly. Doctors warned he would likely be profoundly deaf by age 30, prompting him to learn sign language while clinging to his passion for music as a drummer.

Years later, when Richard discovered singing in his senior year of high school, he fell in love with the feeling of expression and connection to others through voice. However, he had trouble singing in tune, he ran out of breath easily, his voice would crack often, and his throat hurt while fighting and straining for high notes. But none of that stopped him. Threatened by total hearing loss, he felt the pressure to achieve his musical aspirations before time ran out. So he quit the rock band he was in, sold his drum set, and started writing songs and singing every day.

Determined to succeed, Richard began to study physiology and neurology books, learned vocal techniques from tapes and DVDs, traveled great distances to work with world-renowned singing teachers—long before online resources like YouTube existed. And from 1994 to 1996, he was fortunate enough to be mentored by Ted Neeley during the A.D. Jesus Christ Superstar tour, where Ted’s guidance proved to be a cornerstone in the trajectory of Richard’s career, pursuing his passion in music regardless of the obstacles that lie ahead.

click to continue...

Throughout this learning period, Richard’s brain was leveraging neuroplasticity, a process where the brain rewires itself to improve its functions, in this case, processing sound. This resulted in a full recovery in his right auditory cortex, associated with the left ear. While he did eventually still lose all hearing in his right ear, recovering 100% on one side was life altering. In fact, recent hearing tests show that Richard’s sensitivity to frequencies goes well beyond the average spectrum for humans half his age. Living with monaural hearing means half the world is silenced to him, and he cannot discern the direction of sound. However, this unique perspective allows him to focus on the full spectrum of sound with extraordinary clarity, enabling him to hear and analyze the most precise details within a singer’s voice that often go unnoticed by others.

As Richard’s vocal skills began to advance, he found a new passion: teaching. He started by coaching beginner students while pursuing a full-time singing career. This sparked an entirely new adventure for Richard. He discovered that by teaching others, he had a front row seat to interact with and learn from other singers’ instincts and learning styles. He was exposed to new challenges and behaviors of the voice that further deepened his curiosity.

After many years of teaching at various music schools, he branched out on his own and started teaching online in 2007, in the early days of Skype. Where most teachers felt limited by video-conferencing, Richard thrived in an environment that required strong communication skills and a highly developed ear to evaluate voices through an online platform.

This period of online teaching was transformative for Richard. It was during this time that he solidified his unique teaching style, now known as the Throga Technique. This innovative approach, which breaks down the human voice into the 7 Dimensions of Singing, is the first and only vocal technique in U.S. history to be awarded a full-utility patent. Richard uses this groundbreaking technique to guide singers of all levels, helping them to unlock their true vocal potential and achieve their singing goals.

Richard’s teaching is not just rooted in theory, but also in his extensive real-life experience on stage and in the studio. His journey has led him to become a multi Guinness World Record breaker, demonstrating his mastery over breath control and vocal stability with the “Longest Continuous Note” (three times) and “Longest Scream” ever recorded by a human. In 2024, Richard appeared on the Emmy-nominated HBO series, “How To With John Wilson,” where he unofficially surpassed his own record by sustaining a single pitch for an astonishing 2 minutes and 38 seconds, breaking his previous mark by 37 seconds.

As a vocalist, Richard is an award-winning performer, acclaimed for his solo roles as Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar and Jean Valjean in Les Misérables. Between 1991 and 2015, he released multiple albums as a songwriter and vocal producer, which led to opportunities to co-write and demo songs for artists such as Josh Groban and Michael Jackson, alongside his musical partner Johnny Cummings, now a #1 Billboard Songwriter.

As Richard’s career evolved, so did the successes of his private students, who now span 126 countries. His clients include everyone from beginners to seasoned professionals and acclaimed songwriters, including two BMI John Lennon Songwriting Scholarship Competition winners and artists signed to Sony BMG, Universal Music Group, Big Machine Records, and Warner Music Group among many others.

He has coached finalists on shows like The Voice, AGT, Yo Soy El Artista, X-Factor, and American Idol, along with members of Big Time Rush, Daughtry, Trans Siberian Orchestra, The Temptations, and cast members from Grease (Live on Fox) and Descendants 5 (2026). His students have also performed at Walt Disney World, Disneyland, and Disney Tokyo and starred in Broadway and national tours, including Hadestown, Moulin Rouge, In The Heights, Jekyll & Hyde, and the original recordings for Frank Wildhorn’s Dracula The Musical.

Richard’s dedication to vocal excellence and education over the last 32 years extends beyond his individual coaching. He represented the United States in the Suncane Skale vocal competition televised throughout Europe in 2008, has adjudicated the Voice of Dance Life Unite in Australia in 2017 and 2018, and led vocal workshops for actors from 2015 to 2018 at Casting Camps in Los Angeles and Talent Camp at Universal Studios with the Green Room Actors Studio. Richard has also conducted multiple vocal masterclasses at Fontanel Nashville in Tennessee and Bergen School of the Arts in New York from 2017 to 2019, as well as all three JMC Academies (Berklee School of Music affiliate) across Australia.

His commitment to expanding access to quality vocal education has made him a leading figure in the field. In 2016, Richard released a #1 best-selling book on Amazon based on his patented, innovative approach, “The 7 Dimensions of Singing.” In 2017, he was invited to present on vocal health and rehabilitation to classroom teachers across New York State at the NYSSMA Summer Conference. In 2018, he served as Vocal Director for the world premiere of Queendom the Musical. In 2021, he co-founded The Vocal Gym Course, making his groundbreaking vocal technique accessible worldwide, followed by a Homeschool version in 2023—the first online singing course to offer a full Fine Arts credit to homeschoolers internationally. And most recently, Richard launched a YouTube reaction channel, where he co-hosts and shares his passion for vocal education with 300,000+ subscribers.

Richard’s story is a testament to the transformative power of passion and perseverance. Once on a trajectory towards profound deafness, he emerged as a trailblazer in the world of vocal coaching. Today, he stands as an elite vocal specialist, his voice echoing across all seven continents of the globe—including Antarctica, where even scientists in the world’s most remote outpost have benefited from his vocal expertise.

I saw Richard for vocal therapy and he was extremely helpful! His approach is super gentle and he is great at educating you on what's happening with your voice. He gave me simple exercises to help my symptoms improve while I was waiting to see a voice specialist. I had been traveling long-term with a suspected vocal injury so it was especially helpful to be able to see him online. Thank you Richard!

My daughter has been taking voice lessons remotely with Richard, and even though they are in different time zones, the experience has been wonderful. Richard is consistently professional, patient, caring, and encouraging. He does an excellent job of making virtual lessons engaging and effective. The improvement in my daughter’s confidence has been remarkable. Not only has her singing technique improved, but the quality, strength, and overall sound of her voice have developed significantly as well. Most importantly, she now feels more confident in her abilities and enjoys singing more than ever. As a parent, I truly appreciate the positive, supportive environment Richard creates. His dedication and expertise shine through in every lesson, and I highly recommend him to anyone looking for a talented voice teacher.

My daughter’s experience with Throga, and specifically with her coach Richard, has been nothing short of outstanding. From the moment we began lessons, it was clear that Richard not only possessed a deep knowledge of vocal technique but also had a special way of connecting with his students. Over the course of her lessons, my daughter’s progress was incredible. Her vocal range, control, and confidence improved dramatically, and it all culminated in her being selected as the lead in her 5th grade school play. I can’t recommend Throga and Richard enough. If you’re looking for top-notch vocal coaching with someone who genuinely cares about their students, this is the place to go. My daughter’s transformation is proof of the incredible value of these lessons.

My daughter has been taking voice lesson from Coach Richard for a while, as she enjoys singing and performing on stage. Coach Richard combines technical training through his “7 Dimensions of Singing” to help her improve breath control, articulations like clear pronunciation, pitch accuracy, along with many other areas to enhance overall performance. He tailors each lesson appropriately to keep singing fun and enjoyable. Coach Richard is really experienced in vocal training. He has refined ears and able to identify fine details and provide solutions through effective exercises. He also guide my daughter to emphasize on artistic expressions, how to interpret and analyze lyrics, and to cultivate a profound connection with her audience. These voice trainings go beyond singing on stage. Coach Richard’s knowledge in vocal anatomy, terminology, understanding of human physiology and how everything connects to the brain…..etc. are helpful in many ways. It is like combining science into an art form. We are very grateful to be working with Coach Richard on this journey.

Richard is an excellent teacher. He is knowledgeable and creates a safe space to learn and explore. I find the Throga technique to be a wonderful framework for identifying my strengths and weaknesses and for evaluating my progress. I am in my early 50s and probably older than the typical student, but I think it is never too late to learn more about my instrument and to develop my skills further. I only wish I had discovered Richard and Throga sooner!

I’ve been working with Richard for over a month now, every week. The unique approach to technique and knowledge about the vocal cords themselves is unmatched. I’ve worked with great vocal coaches in the past, but this is a whole new approach that is really working for me. I came to Richard with a vocal issue and fatigue due to acid reflux. Being a professional singer, it was important to get this figured out! Not only is my voice healing, but I’m tapping into new heights that I’ve always wanted to explore. I’m so excited about my progress thus far, and even more excited about what I will achieve in a year from now. Don’t waste time if you want to take your singing talent to the next level. This is the spot guys!

I started out training with Throga not understanding how to use my voice to create music.. He believes that anyone can learn to sing, and i am living proof. We would start our classes with the vocal gym and finish them with singing. The vocal gym exercises, were fun and always changing. Like a gym, i started seeing improvement in a few months. He focused on different aspects of the vocal ability; Range, strength, accuracy of pitch were a few of them that i’m paraphrasing here. I find myself humming the exercises as i commute to open up my voice even when readying to speak to different folks or when i lose my voice at a loud bar. It’s really quite profound that i lose my voice at a bar, and can re invigorate it by doing the exercises which release the swollen vocal cords. Richard has done his research and is committed to helping people discover their true voice and capabilities. I think it would be highly beneficial to give his book and online course a try. And if one has the resources, his personal sessions are outstanding.

Throga is truly wonderful! This review is long overdue, and it's so important to share our powerful experience with Throga, Richard Fink IV, Johnny Cummings, Sam Polizzi, and the rest of the team! Our daughter attended the Throga music retreat at the age of 8, and she walked away with loving memories, as well as practical and critical tools that are still part of her vocal routine today. She also collaborated with Johnny and Sam, utilizing the Throga platform when writing, recording, and releasing three original songs that were dedicated to kids and teens who struggle with their emotions. Throga has a huge place in our hearts and we highly recommend exploring their menu and learning from Richard and the talented team.

Working with Richard has been fun, engaging, thought-provoking and overall, extremely rewarding. Richard Fink IV has been our daughter's vocal coach since July 2019. Richard is truly an exceptional coach. He combines vocal science and a highly organized methodology (outlined in his '7 Dimensions of Singing' book) with a genuinely kind, caring, and supportive approach. By building trust with his clients, he gives them a safe environment to develop their singing ability while also building their confidence to perform as a vocalist. At age 16 our daughter has successfully performed in several musicals, choruses, and has achieved nearly perfect scores as a vocal soloist in 2 New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) competitions. Richard Fink IV has been instrumental in all of these vocal accomplishments. I am confident she is performing at this level at this age because she is under Richard's tutelage.

I’ve made tremendous improvement as a vocalist under the tutelage of Richard Fink IV. His book, 7 Dimensions of Singing The Throga Technique, is a comprehensive guide to understanding and improving your voice. The 7 dimensions are outlined in an accessible manner and explored from anatomical and practical perspectives. This holistic approach has deepened my connection to my voice and empowered me as a vocalist. The online “Vocal Gym” exercises continue to provide new challenges and opportunities for growth. More specifically, they provide the means to develop individual dimensions and in turn, find new ways to express myself as a vocalist and artist. Richard has been an irreplaceable figure in my journey as a vocalist and I am grateful for him as a teacher and mentor.

I came to Richard at the start of my music career with no real idea on how to best use my voice. The introduction to his 7 dimensions of singing saw immediate improvements in my voice. It also helped me protect my vocals as I began to gig more and more. Now, I play as many as 10 gigs a week which would not be possible without this training. We go to the gym for our bodies, why not go to the gym for your voice?! The Vocal Gym is one of the best things I've done for my growth as a singer and musician. I've known about Throga for years now and it always reminds me of the time when I went to their Throga Retreat in Orlando (2017). I made my first ever song with Throga Records! It was an unforgettable experience that I'm so glad I could recall. Richard Fink IV has always taught about the 7 dimensions of singing, which include flexibility, breathing, intonation, range, tone, articulation, and strength. Through the Vocal Gym, you are able to identify your weaknesses and strengths, and are given the right techniques to improve. It's a wonderful system, willing to help you become a better singer! I started reading the Throga 7 dimensions to singing book and found it to be so interesting and useful that I dove in deeper by booking virtual lessons with Johnny Cummings and Richard Fink who helped me find my own voice. They ran me through the vocal gym exercise and Throga techniques that you can find in the 7 Dimensions to Singing book giving me even more of a great understanding and approach to my singing. The exercises for my vocal chords got me in shape to hit the recording studio with confidence and vocal stamina. By using the methods I learned in the book and working with Richard and Johnny online I was able to take my singing in the car belting, and amazing shower voice, and actually hear and understand why some of the things I thought I was doing were amazing were in fact not as pleasing to the human ear as I thought. They helped my correct my bad habits by identifying the weaknesses in my approach and gave me the tools to work out and build the strength I needed. I used the Throga 7 Dimensions To Singing book as my main companion in between the online sessions and still keep my Throga workout going. I finished vocals on my first record and can’t wait to work with these guys again on my next!

It’s so great to find a program that properly teaches about the voice and it’s use by relating the physiology of the voice to its practice and techniques! Understanding the basics of the biology and how the voice works physically really unlocks a new way of thinking about singing! Breaking down everything into “The 7 dimensions of singing” is super helpful in pinpointing what exactly to work on and then having the Vocal Gym to show you exactly how exercises are done and provide clear instruction is just fantastic. Plus Richard Fink IV who has actual credibility and presence in the music industry coaches you through the program and keeps things really interesting with anecdotes and just explains everything so clearly. I’ve seen a lot of good and bad courses provided both online and at institutes and this is easily one of the best for getting to grips with how a real singer can use their voice to its potential! Definitely recommend!

The Throga method has been by far the most effective method of vocal coaching I've experienced. I've taken private vocal lessons most of my life, and while they've helped me to a degree, I didn't really acquire a thorough understanding of my own voice until I started through. Throga has been a game changer for me as a professional vocalist. I've learned the intricacies of vocalizing that have helped my confidence and endurance as a performer.

Richard Fink and Throga are the most innovative aspects of on-line music training and instruction in America. I have learned so much from his work and have maintained a greatly enjoyed personal and professional relationship with him and his work for many years. I strongly encourage any interested in music instruction to use his Throga system. It can be used as an independent instruction resource or as an augmentation for other instruction, at any level. The U.S. Patent granted to this work is a landmark testament to the novelty, inventiveness, and value of this learning resource.

Richard is a phenomenon in and of himself, and his vocal training method, Throga is like a personal trainer at a gym for your voice. Uniquely, this program teaches the student about the individual aspects of singing, breaking down each component so that it can be isolated, then improved upon through a range of various exercises. And while it is comprehensive technical training for all elements of the vocal instrument, it's not boring or stale. Richard's fun, easy-to-use program is expertly crafted, helping even the most experienced of singers identify areas for improvement. Ultimately, because all "dimensions" of the singer's muscle are exercised, this program can sculpt a well-rounded, capable singer out of any voice. ❤️

I worked with Richard Fink IV for a year and I loved it! He's a great vocal coach and every lesson I attended taught me something new, like ways to warm up, combat vocal fatigue, or practice. He made me feel welcome. The Vocal Gym also helped me pinpoint my strengths and weaknesses and work through them. I feel much more confident now when I warm up and perform and I know I will carry these lessons with me into the future.

Richard and Throga are incredible. I've had a chance to see my wife use it, my daughter use it and they improved dramatically in their vocal talents. My wife now uses the technique to coach her own students and they love it. I've also worked with Richard directly on a few of his retreats as a fitness and nutrition coach to support his singing technique. He is a great mentor and person to boot.

I have studied with Richard Fink IV for 7 years now, and I would not be as strong of a vocalist as I am today without his guidance and training. Out of all the different techniques I’ve learned throughout my time as a vocalist, Throga has been the most helpful in reaching my goals as a singer. Having the knowledge of the 7 dimensions of singing allows you to pinpoint exactly how your voice works, and the vocal gym consists of a wide variety of vocal exercises that will not only strengthen every aspect of your voice, but will allow you to overcome each obstacle you come across on your vocal journey.

Richard Fink IV has been providing online vocal coaching to our daughter over the last seven and a half years! In that time we had the pleasure of attending three Throga retreats: two in Vegas, one in Orlando. Each one of them was very well organized, professional, and most importantly a positive, encouraging environment for our daughter. These events were held at professional recording studios with state of the art equipment. At these events we were able to see Richard in person and how attentive he was with his students of all ages and all skill levels, with a great ability to meet them at their own level. Richard demonstrated incredible patience and kindness, as did all the Throga instructors at these events. Additionally, we found the Throga instructors to be highly skilled and talented singers and musicians in their own right.

I have improved my singing much more than I expected because of Throga. Richard Fink IV is a wonderful vocal coach, going over many techniques to bring out your voice to the fullest. I was impressed by the amount of effort put into the 7 Dimensions of Singing, talking about how your instrument works and simple physical exercises and ways you can improve your singing. The Vocal Gym is another way that helped me improve my singing, with in-depth videos breaking down each exercise. Throga is an amazing environment to help develop your voice.

I've always loved singing and knew I wanted to make music my career and life's work, but I lacked knowledge on how to keep my voice healthy when using it every day, how to properly warm-up, and how to challenge myself to sing what I wanted to without pushing too hard. Richard Fink IV not only taught me techniques that I still use every day to properly warm-up and keep my voice in check, but he also took the time to listen to the songs I write and give me feedback on the best ways to sing them with his Throga techniques. All around so thankful to have found Richard Fink IV and Throga so early on in my career, as his guidance has been a massive help.

About 6 years ago, and after much hesitance, I went from being just a guitar player to a guitar player/singer in a one man band playing 7 shows a week. Having had no formal training prior to that and lacking the basic knowledge of what the human voice as an instrument is, I ran into some issues and had to stop singing for a while. Thankfully, no actual damage occurred. This happened shortly before my birthday and my partner had already booked some sessions with Richard from the Throga team as a present for me before I ran into issues with my voice (talk about timing!). Richard was able to get me back to singing in no time and provided me with tools that I've used everyday since we had our sessions. His knowledge, ability to spot and hear what's going on and somehow curate all of that to really tailor the information and content to fit the individual needs was simply outstanding. On top of everything else he's a sweetheart and shares a love for rock music. Wether you're a seasoned singer or just getting started, coming out of some sort of recovery or simply just curious, do yourself a favour and get in touch with Richard or anyone from the Throga team, you won't regret it.

I hired Richard Fink IV as a vocal coach for my students right before their BIG production. A bit of background here, these students were from different walks of life and ethnicities. The kiddos NEVER worked with a vocal coach before and they NEVER put on a production like this before. The session happened right around the pandemic so we were extremely limited in what we could accomplish. However, Richard went above and beyond my expectations. He had the kids laughing, singing, and as each moment progressed, I could see their confidence build and build. It was exactly what these kids needed in such an uncertain time. Richard taught his Throga methodology to middle school students. I thought it would go right over their heads. Nope! They grasped the concept and utilized the tools the night of their performance. Let me tell you, the confidence they brought forth and their singing was INCREDIBLE and it is all thanks to Richard Fink IV and his Throga methods. I highly recommend him to anyone looking to take their singing to the next level and or even brush up on some basics. He can work with anyone and get ANYONE to sing. Most importantly, to sing correctly!
